I'm looking into going up to U.of Michigan in Ann Arbor next year. I'm not able to cut the non-resident fees...
anyone know of a good solid way to get around that? I've got some pretty specific questions on it if anyone knows much about that.
Also looking for anyone who was in SNRE- or Conservation programs of any kind there. Been talking to some of the faculty a tiny bit but not too much yet. I just reciently decided on Michigan. Kindof nervous to ask the registration office about the non-resident stuff... sends up red flags to them and then I am stuck with tripple tuition.
Thanx,
trish

Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Fri, November 18, 2005 - 1:44 AMTheres a real simple solution. Become a resident, move there and stay a few months, get a Michigan drivers license and establish residency. When you apply to school..fudge it a little and say you lived in Michigan for about a year. Trust me nobody will check. As long you have a valid ID that's at least a few months old.
I did the same thing when I moved to San Francisco from Michigan, nobody checked or even asked.
It's only a little white lie and you will be living there anyway, right? -

Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 9:56 AMCool. This was the orriginal plan. (move in March/April) and get all that lined up before the summer and then start in the fall. But I wasn't sure if they would check any farther back than that. PLUS its REALLY hard to check out a school from this distance without letting them know you arn't there. Think I'm going to try and visit for like a week sometime either before or after the holidays (now thats vague) and see what i can get sorted.
THANX Tommie.

Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 6:47 PMThe other thing you can do is go to WCC or Eastern for your first year and transfer. If you're careful all your credits will transfer and you get a year to acclimate to college. I got my AS at WCC, hen transferred all but one class to UM in full credit. The adjustment was a bit harsh, but it worked. -

Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 8:50 PMNow I have a question...isn't it hard to transfer graduate classes, or tranfer to a different graduate school all together? I was under the impression that once you were accepted into a Ph.D program that you pretty much had to stick to that program and that school and that transferring is very rare and perhaps almost impossible. I would love to be told that this isn't true, so please let me know if I'm mistaken. :) -

Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 9:11 PMNo, as lon as the schools are all accredited and have a good working relationship, it's just an extra hour or two of paperwork. you'll spend that much time finding the right line for registration at UM.
My working theory is this: start at your end school, and ask which schools they recommend for lower degrees and transfer credits. Then attend the school who's highest degree is the next one you'e shoooting for. WCC only offers associates, so you take the first two years there, then transfer to eastern which offers bachelors but fewer masters, then go to grad school at UM. Most schools give the most attention and class time to the highest degree they offer. Getting a BS at UM if you're going grad is silly. they grinnd people through there like a machine, and a very unpleasant one at that. Save your money, education is education. Your final degree will be from UM so you still get all the kudos. -

Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 10:04 AMI think you misunderstood my question because what I was asking about was transferring graduate credits to another graduate school. I already did my undergrad at UM (and it was an awesome experience with incredible professors and similarly amazing students!---not unpleasant in the least). The initial posters question was regarding grad school since she was accepted into a Ph.D program so she too already has a baccaleurate degree. This is why I was asking about grad school transfer credits. -

Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 3:41 PMAhh, didn't catch that.
But I was responnding to you. As long as both schools are accredited inn the same degree program, there shouldn't be too much of an issue. -

Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 4:11 PMI too was wondering whether graduate credits transfer easily. Is that what you are referring to when you say that it's easy as long as both schools are accredited and the credits are within the same degree program? -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 6:11 PMAny level of classes has the potential to be transferred. in the eyes of most schools (that go that high) a 100 level class and a 500 level class are about the same thing. Some schools have problems with their accreditation, or subscribe to a unique teching model, so it never hurts to check, but transferring within a league (UM, MI State, OH State, etc) shuld be a single form application and a transcript shuffle.

Re: 91 members and 3 posts... but i got a question...
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 8:53 PMI think that the other suggestions are good and hopefully it will work so you don't have to pay crazy high tuition. I had friends who did undergraduate degrees in SNRE and loved it---I hope you have a good time in the program as well. I really loved my time at UM---I even miss it at times. Have fun in Ann Arbor! -
